Education interns conduct and assist with educational programs in home horticulture and natural history for children, families and adults. Topics might include recycling, birds or reptiles, as well as horticulture projects such as topiary, container gardening and design. Presentations are given in the form of guided walks, hikes, demonstrations and workshops. Education interns must speak and write well, enjoy meeting and teaching a variety of people, and possess enthusiasm, flexibility, and a love of the outdoors. Interns come from a variety of majors including horticulture, education, natural history, forestry, botany, entomology and ecology. A junior level standing is recommended. Horticulture interns are involved in the practical, day-to-day maintenance of the Gardens. Work in horticultural displays, trails, production greenhouses, conservatories, including the Day Butterfly Center (entomology and horticulture) and the vegetable garden. Interns’ daily responsibilities include manual labor and equipment operations plus hands-on work with native and exotic plants, cultural techniques and technologies and horticulture professionals. Interaction with the public is expected as well. Horticulture interns are majors in landscape design, horticulture, entomology, botany, forestry and related areas.
